Using Your 'Send To' List
Tech Tips. Vol. 2004 No. 17
The 'Send To' list is another handy feature accessed by a right-click. With a couple of simple mouse movements you can copy or send files and folders to a variety of destinations, including email contacts, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) buddies, your desktop, printer, floppy drive or CD burner, and more.

The basics
To access the 'Send To' list, first find the object you want to send (on your desktop, in your 'Start' menu, or in Windows Explorer) and right-click it. You will see a 'Send To' option; move your cursor over it to display a list of all the destinations already present in your 'Send To' folder (see below). Left-click on any of the destinations to transfer a copy of the object to it.

What destinations are present automatically?
Windows automatically adds certain items to your 'Send To' list. Depending on your version of Windows and your software, your pre-generated list may contain some or all of these:
  • 'My Documents', which copies an object into your 'My Documents' folder.
  • 'Desktop (create shortcut)', which places a shortcut to the item on your desktop.
  • If you have the latest version of AIM, you should have 'AIM buddy' and 'AIM share' options. 'AIM buddy' will initiate a file transfer to a buddy of your choice; 'AIM share' will copy the object to your AIM shared folder.
  • If you have WinZip, you should see a 'Compressed (zipped) Folder' option. This will automatically create a WinZip folder containing the object; the zipped folder will be placed in the same location as the original item.
  • If you have a CD-RW drive, depending on your software, you may see that drive as an option. Choosing it will begin the process of burning a copy of the object to CD.
  • If you use Outlook for your email, you should see a 'Mail Recipient' option, which will open Outlook and create a new message with your object already attached.
  • If you have a floppy drive, it will probably be present in the list. Use this option to copy an object to a floppy disk.
Adding to the list
You can add folders, CD/floppy drives, and printers to your 'Send To' list. To add a folder or disk drive, first locate it, right-click it, and choose 'Copy'. Next, open Windows Explorer, and bring up 'Documents and Settings' | '<your Windows logon name>' | 'Send To'. Right-click within the 'Send To' folder and choose 'Paste shortcut'. That's all there is to it.

To add a printer, you'll need to go to 'Start' | 'Printers and Faxes'. Find the printer you want to add, right-click it, and choose 'Create shortcut'. A message will pop up, telling you that the shortcut will be placed on the desktop; click 'Ok'. Find the shortcut on the desktop, right-click it, and choose 'Cut'. Find your 'Send To' folder as per the directions above and paste the shortcut there.
